Line of Lode Precinct
The History.
The Line of Lode is one of the world’s largest bodies of ore, containing the silver, lead and zinc that made fortunes in this remote outback city. The massive ore body was discovered by boundary rider Charles Rasp, who found what he thought was a piece of tin while mustering sheep on an outback station over 140 years ago, he had no idea how significant it would be.
Adorning the top of the Line of Lode is the striking architecturally designed miners memorial that has the name of each miner who perished, etched into freestanding glass panels within the high, rust-red steel walls.
Passing through the monument is sobering, it allows you to reflect on the human tragedy that encompasses a key part of the Broken Hill mining history, with over 800 lives lost since mining commenced in 1883.
Also sitting proudly on top of the 45 metre high mullock pile is the Broken Earth Complex.
The panoramic view from the summit of the Line of Lode is a spectacular one.
